A Simple Farm and Barn, Cannock Chase AONB

Following three previous attempts by previous owners to gain planning approval for re-workings and additional storage buildings on the site, EHA were contacted by the new owner to sympathetically refurbish and extend a 19th century country farmhouse and barn. The house had been subject to a number of accumulated additions and alterations over its 150-year lifespan, with the barn being re-built in the 1990’s. Taking the two separate elements – Cottage and Barn - provided a starting point for the development of a new relationship between the two buildings, history and the future. A strategy was developed which removed the incremental additions from the original modest brick cottage, revealing the honest and simple original building, a new building was then planned which retained the formal shape and orientation of the original barn. A further new ‘agricultural store’ is inset into the surrounding hillside (Red Hill) providing storage for the attached small holding. Planning gained 2019.
